First, make sure that your Illustrator installation is up-to-date. If it isn’t, you’ll need to update it before you can start using PDFs with Illustrator. Second, make sure that your PDF creation tools are enabled. This means that they’re turned on in the Preferences dialog box of your Illustrator window (or in the File menu of the Adobe Photoshop or Inkscape programs). Finally, make sure that PDF creation is set up so that when you save a file as a PDF, Illustrator automatically creates a thumbnail for it in the Output window. This will help you quickly see what’s inside a PDF file and avoid having to open it again and again to check its contents.
